Military Lessons for Ministry Leadership

Bart L. Denny, Ph.D.

When Bart Denny began doctoral research on pastors who had led struggling small churches toward renewed health, he wasn’t studying military veterans. Not intentionally, anyway. Yet seven of the eleven pastors he interviewed had served in the armed forces.

That discovery raised the question behind Reassigned: what if military service forms people for Christian ministry in ways veterans, and their churches, often fail to recognize? Military experience is no substitute for Christian character, theological preparation, or the discernment of the church. But the years a veteran spent learning to accept responsibility, work on a team, endure hard assignments, train others and make decisions under pressure shouldn’t be dismissed, either.

Reassigned helps veterans look back at their service with new eyes: what those years formed in them, which strengths can now be placed in Christ’s service, and which habits need to be adapted for ministry.

Human Enhancement, Christian Wisdom, and the Questions Coming to Your Church

Bart L. Denny, Ph.D.

Advances in artificial intelligence, genetics, neurotechnology, reproductive medicine and life-extension research are raising questions that once belonged to science fiction. When does healing become enhancement? Should healthy people improve memory, intelligence, strength or emotional control? What happens when remaining unenhanced carries a social or economic cost?

Human, Still begins with a conviction Christians need before answering those questions: technology can tell us what is possible, but it can’t tell us what kind of human beings we ought to become. Drawing on Scripture, theology, bioethics and contemporary transhumanist thought, the book offers a practical Christian framework for thinking about enhancement without fear or naïve enthusiasm.

It isn’t a catalog of approved and forbidden technologies. It’s a guide to faithful discernment for pastors, parents, caregivers and thoughtful Christians, asking whether the future on offer resembles the humanity revealed in Jesus Christ.
