What we collect, what we do with it, and how to have it removed.
True Bearing Press is a small publisher, and we keep things simple. We don’t run advertising on this site, we don’t use tracking cookies or outside analytics services, and we don’t sell, rent or share anyone’s information.
Visit counts
To see which pages are useful, the site keeps its own simple counts, with no cookies and no outside services. When a page opens, we record the page, the website or search that sent you, your general device type and browser, and an approximate location (country, and for U.S. visitors the state and city) worked out from your internet address. We don’t store the internet address itself. To count visits without recognizing anyone, each visit gets a code made from your address, your browser and a secret that changes every day, so we can’t connect your visits from one day to the next. We also count clicks on our buy links and downloads of our free PDFs. These counts are seen only by True Bearing Press and are deleted after two years. Approximate locations come from IP Geolocation by DB-IP.
The newsletter
When you sign up, we keep your email address, your first name if you give it, the topics or book waitlists you choose, the date you signed up and confirmed, and the internet address you signed up from. We keep those details as a record that you asked to receive the newsletter. We use your email address only to send what you asked for (the newsletter topics you picked, or a note when a book you’re waiting for comes out) and the one-time email that asks you to confirm. Every email has a link to change your choices.
The list is stored on our web host and the newsletter is sent from our own mailbox. Our newsletters don’t contain tracking pixels, so we don’t know whether you open them or what you click.
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link, and it works with one click. If you’d like your information deleted entirely, email inquiries@truebearing.press and we’ll remove it.
The contact form
If you write to us through the contact form, your message, name and email address come to our inbox so we can answer you. We don’t add you to the newsletter unless you sign up for it.
Manuscript proposals
If you send us a proposal through the submission form, we keep what you write and any sample chapters you attach on our web host, in a private area that can’t be reached from the website. We use them only to consider your book and to write back to you, and we don’t share them. If you’d like your proposal and files deleted, email inquiries@truebearing.press.
The author community
Our author community is private, and membership is by application or invitation. When you apply or join, we keep your name, email address and your answers to our questions about you and your writing; only True Bearing Press sees those answers. For members we also keep the short line they write about themselves, their email settings, and what they post, upload or vote. Other members see names, that short line and posts, never email addresses. Poll votes are anonymous: members see only the totals. Signing in sets one cookie that keeps you signed in on that device for 30 days; it isn’t used for anything else. If you’d like to leave the community and have your information deleted, email inquiries@truebearing.press.
The launch team
If you sign up for a book’s launch team, we keep your name, email address, the city you give us and your answers to the sign-up questions, so we can send your early copy and occasional launch-team emails. Every team email has a link to leave the team. If you’d like your information deleted, email inquiries@truebearing.press.
Interviews for books
When Bart is researching a book, he may invite people to fill out a short form about their experience or to be interviewed. We keep what you tell us on that form (your name, contact details, church and answers), Bart’s notes about your conversation, the quotes he’d like to use, and your answers about them, including the permission you give. This information is used only to plan and write the book and is never added to the newsletter or shared. Interview recordings and transcripts are not stored on this website. To have your information deleted, email inquiries@truebearing.press.
Reader reviews and group orders
If you send a review of one of our books, we show your name as you typed it, the city you give us, your words and the month, after Bart reads it. We keep your email address private and use it only to write to you about your review. If you ask about copies for a group, we use what you send only to answer you. Email inquiries@truebearing.press to have either removed.
Backups
The website emails True Bearing Press a copy of its records once a week, so nothing is lost if the web host has trouble. Those copies stay with us.
Other services
This site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google’s servers when a page opens. Links to Amazon, Lulu and social media take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.
Children
This site and the newsletter are meant for adults. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Questions
