Emergency readiness plan

Decide who does what before something goes wrong: a missing child, a medical emergency, severe weather, a report of abuse, the pastor suddenly unavailable. Fill it in with your leaders, then print it and keep copies where people can find them.

Each emergency below comes with suggested first steps. Change them to fit your church. The first conversation about this will probably turn up some confusion about who does what, and that’s the point: better to find it around a table than during a crisis.

This plan is a starting point, not legal advice. Check your state’s reporting laws and your insurance carrier’s requirements. The idea comes from Chapter 10 of Reassigned, “Train Before the Crisis.”
